This week we at Not-for-Profit & Charity Community Consultants (NFPCCC), Diverse Communities and Social Services (DCSS Australia), and Kurri Kurri Not-for-Profit Indigenous Construction Services (KKICS), from the 4th to the 11th of July we all celebrate the important Indigenous celebration of NAIDOC week.
NAIDOC Week?celebrates the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is celebrated?by all Australians?and is a great opportunity to learn more about?Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
This year the theme is Heal Country, Heal Our Nation. Country is inherent to our identity. It sustains our lives in every aspect - spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally. It is more than a place. When we talk about Country it is spoken of like a person. The country is family, kin, law, lore, ceremony, traditions, and language. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples it has been this way since the dawn of time.
Through our languages and songs, we speak to Country; through our ceremonies and traditions we sing to - and celebrate Country – and Country speak to us. Increasingly, we worry about the Country.
For generations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities have been calling for stronger measures to recognise, protect, and maintain all aspects of our culture and heritage for all Australians. We have continued to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.
We take this opportunity to remember everything that the Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander communities and people have achieved in this country's rich history, we also all remember back to the iconic year of 1938 where fellow Australians all came together and protested to fight for equality.
For as if such a crucial time did not happen us as Not-for-Profit Community Organisations may not have been able to form. May we use this week to remember all the negative experiences the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and families have suffered through and why it is so important for our organisations and communities to do the best we can to work towards such a crucial goal in helping them.
May we also use this week as something extremely positive, as it allows us to view the beauty of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, making our organisation’s all that more exciting as we are helping such interesting communities.

NAIDOC week comes around annually, and as we are new Indigenous community-focused organisation’s, we hope to use this week and in the very future to allow it to help us to keep track of our Organisations growth and have it as a benchmark to allow us to view our new achievements each year that the Organisations produces.

3 年Thanks for sharing, Tom. I have learned something which gives me a deeper understanding of the struggles Aboriginal peoples have gone through and continue to battle.
