NAHJ to kick off annual conference with a day of environmental reporting and data journalism training open to all

NAHJ will kick off its 40th Anniversary Conference and Expo on July 9, 2024 with a full day of journalism training focused on climate and environmental justice, as well as half-day sessions focused on data journalism and freedom of information.?

These hands-on sessions are open to all and will be held at the Loews Hollywood Hotel, the conference venue in Los Angeles. NAHJ is inviting journalists, journalism students as well as members of the public interested in environmental issues and/or journalism to attend.

The all day “Climate and Environmental Justice Coverage Workshop” will be led by top? science/environmental journalists from publications such as 纽约时报 , the Los Angeles Times , and The Associated Press . At the same time, NAHJ is offering a choice of half-day sessions on data journalism, digital storytelling, or accessing public data.

“Journalists of all backgrounds need expertise in covering climate change as it impacts more and more sectors,” said NAHJ President Yvette Cabrera, herself an award-winning environmental journalist. “It’s also important to recognize that environmental issues such as pollution disproportionately affect communities of color.”

The day’s programming also includes a three-hour “Introducción al periodismo de datos” in Spanish.?

The day’s training costs $50 for general admission and free for students, with discounted rates for NAHJ members. It’s also free for those registered to attend the annual conference, which runs through July 13, 2024. Learn more and sign up.

A cornerstone of attending NAHJ’s annual conference is the opportunity to participate in extensive skills-building sessions and hands-on workshops. This year, NAHJ will offer nearly 100 workshops & training sessions for conference attendees.
