NAEST an innovative tool for Physics learning

National Anveshika Experimental Skill Test prelims is on process these days. I have also been assigned the responsibility of being the local coordinator for one center spread over three states. The first experiment out of three in the pipeline is engaging the students and provoking the though process. The out of the box idea is to find the density of mustard seeds to be procured from the kitchen shelf and estimating the packing fraction. My daily interactions with 28 students in my supervision reveal interesting stories.

Physics experimentation can start from the kitchen, this was an idea beyond imagination for two five students.

Experimentation without any regular lab instrument is challenging itself. Designing of the beam balance to find the mass of the seeds and tabulation for the packing fraction seems to be the first hands on session for two students.

A discarded cold drink bottle may be used to find the terminal velocity of the seeds, it was not in even remote thoughts for majority of the students. The students say that they are trying for the extra explorations.
