Two scientists from South America won the 2025 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement on Feb. 11 for their work on the often-overlooked connection between human societies and the natural world. The winners, Argentinian ecologist Sandra Díaz and Brazilian anthropologist Eduardo Brondízio, will share a $250,000 award, marking the first time individuals from South America have received the Tyler award, also referred to as the “environmental Nobel Prize.” Previous recipients include Jane Goodall, Johan Rockstr?m and Michael Mann. Among several significant contributions, Díaz and Brondízio co-chaired a major United Nations-backed report on biodiversity, showing that 1 million species are at risk of extinction due to human activity.
??SPOTLIGHT - Nature in new NDCs
Several countries have submitted new NDCs outlining their plans to address their climate emissions. But which ones have the greatest potential to use nature to meet their climate targets?
The team behind naturebase have assessed the commitments made by Canada and Japan to find their natural climate solutions potential in order to see how much of their UNFFCC commitment could be met by nature.
