"In the '90s, I moved to a student apartment in Oulu. My friend told me I could get an ethernet cable to run to my apartment if I talked to the IT support people. This I did, and I was excited to connect the cable to my computer. But it was not that easy: Linux didn't support my ethernet chip.?

My student tutor encouraged me to solve this problem myself. So I picked up the manual for the National Semiconductor ethernet chip from the university library. With the guide, I programmed a driver for the chip. It got included in the official Linux kernel!

This was the starting point for my career. At the turn of the millennia, many companies were looking for Linux experts. Once I got to the interview, I said, "Just Google my name and Linux Kernel." That is how I got the job, and they even paid me a bonus if I could start immediately. I've been on that path ever since.
