Welcome to latest edition of "MyWayToLuminor" where we talk to our people, about how they got to Luminor, what they do in their roles and why they love working at Luminor.??

Today’s story is about Karolin Nurmsalu, a specialist at Customer Risk Management Unit. Who originally applied for the customer manager position, but ended up getting her dream work in AML area.

Can you tell me about your role? I’m working at the Customer Risk Management Department (CRMD), and my main responsibility is to ensure that the client matches our risk appetite and that the activities are lawful and do not pose a threat to money laundering and terrorism.

What gets you most exciting about your role? When I started my career in banking (not in Luminor), one of my first training was in AML, and from that moment on I knew that this was an area I had a special interest in. I went to study law and compliance so that one day I could start my career in AML. I want the world to be a better place and play my role in reducing crime - therefore working in AML gets me excited and I come to work happily, ready for a new challenge every day!

What was your experience as a candidate? At first, I applied for the customer manager position but during my first interview the recruitment team picked up my interest in AML. Therefore, they put me in touch with the CRMD that conducts customer risk assessments in the fight against money laundering and terrorism. I had an interview with my team lead a few days later and didn't expect an offer at this stage as I had not yet graduated. I was very excited to receive the offer as now I can apply my studies to my day-to-day work and increase my performance, both at university and at work!

What made you decide to join Luminor? It's been my dream to work in AML and the opportunity to start my career whilst still specialising at university is the best way to tie together the studies with real-life experiences. As Luminor is an international bank, I saw the opportunity to grow here professionally over the years to come. Although the decision to join was not very hard to make, every new beginning is a little bit scary, but so far I am happy and glad that I decided to join Luminor.

What’s the best advice you can give to someone who is preparing for an interview at Luminor? Be yourself and believe in yourself. If you know what your goal is, stick to it, don't let the "random" offers to win you over. Don’t underestimate yourself. Even if you think that you do not qualify for the position, then apply and talk about your visions, show how ambitious you are, show them how valuable you are, because as my example shows, if you are ambitious and have a goal in mind, you will achieve everything you want. There’s nothing to lose - only to win!

I am happy to see Karolin in her current role. I remember how she applied for another position and our further phone call. Karolin gave the impression of a very confident and smart person, who is motivated to apply her newly acquired knowledge in the field of AML, so I shared Karolin's contacts with my HR colleague, who was happy to interview Karolin for the AML related role. I agree with Karolin's words about staying true to yourself and showing initiative and courage towards the goal. There are always good people on your way to support you (at least at Luminor for sure!).
