Cybersecurity is like a digital game of cat and mouse—constantly evolving, yet surrounded by myths that leave us in a dilemma. Let’s debunk some of the most common myths and uncover the reality to keep us and our data safe .
Myth 1: I’m too small to be targeted.
Reality: Hackers love small targets. Why? Because they often have weaker defenses. Small businesses, startups, and even individuals are prime targets for automated attacks. No one is too small to be on a hacker’s radar.
Myth 2: Strong passwords are enough.
Reality: A strong password is a good start, but it’s not enough. Hackers do brute force attacks, phishing, and credential stuffing to crack even the toughest passwords. Add multi-factor authentication (MFA) to accounts for an additional layer of protection.
Myth 3: Mac OS aren't subjected to viruses.
Reality: While Mac is less targeted than Windows PCs, they’re not immune. As their popularity grows, so do attacks. Always use antivirus software and keep systems as well as the applications updated, no matter what device is preferred.
Myth 4: Cybersecurity is only an IT problem.
Reality: Cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility. From clicking on phishing emails to using weak passwords, human error is the #1 cause of breaches. A strong security culture starts with us.

Myth 5: I’ll know if I’ve been hacked.
Reality: Many cyberattacks are silent. Hackers can lurk in system for months, stealing data without leaving their footprint. Regular monitoring, threat detection tools, and audits are essential to catch breaches early.
Myth 6: Public Wi-Fi is safe if I don’t visit shady sites.
Reality: Public Wi-Fi is a hacker’s playground. Even on legitimate sites data can be intercepted. Always use a VPN to encrypt connection and avoid accessing sensitive accounts or confidential information on public networks.
Myth 7: Cybersecurity is too expensive.
Reality: As precaution is better than cure, similarly, cost of prevention is cheaper than the cost of a breach. Basic steps like enabling MFA, updating software, and training employees can significantly reduce risks without breaking the bank.
Cybersecurity myths can throw us into a false sense of security, but the reality is that threats are real, evolving, and often invisible. By staying informed and proactive, we can outsmart hackers and protect what matters most.

Great points! Especially the ‘too small to be targeted’ myth—hackers go after vulnerabilities, not size. MFA is a must, and cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility. We all need to stay proactive and ahead of the game!
