How and when did you decide you could not afford something you truly want or need?
Often, the belief that we cannot afford something we want or need isn't grounded in financial reality but in subconscious programming. This mindset is shaped by societal norms, cultural narratives, and inherited beliefs, leading us to reject valuable opportunities without questioning why. This article explores three key examples – taking a break, self-care like massages, and coaching – to illustrate how this programming operates and why it doesn't make sense.
Taking a Break: The Illusion of Inaccessibility
The belief that you can't afford to take a break, whether from work or daily responsibilities, often comes from the subconscious programming that equates rest with laziness. This mindset is deeply ingrained in cultures that glorify constant productivity. In reality, taking a break is crucial for mental and physical health, and can even lead to greater productivity in the long run. The misconception that a break is a luxury rather than a necessity overlooks the value of rest and recovery. This belief isn't a financial constraint but a cultural construct that discourages self-care, perpetuating the myth that downtime is an unaffordable indulgence.
Self-Care: The False Notion of Luxury
Activities like massages are frequently dismissed as unaffordable luxuries. The idea that self-care is excessive spending comes from a deep-seated belief that prioritizing one's comfort and well-being is less important than buying a big car or saving money. This belief is not rooted in financial necessity but in a cultural narrative that values self-denial over self-care. The truth is, regular self-care can prevent burnout, reduce stress, and improve overall health, making it a necessary expense rather than an optional luxury. The false notion of unaffordability in this context is a reflection of societal norms that undervalue personal well-being.

Coaching: The Devaluation of Personal Growth vs. the Education System
Investing in coaching is a prime example where people often convince themselves they can't afford it. The hesitation usually stems from an internalized belief that personal development isn't worth the money unless it guarantees immediate, tangible returns. This belief is flawed. Coaching offers transformative benefits, like enhanced skills, improved mental well-being, and clarity of purpose—benefits that can lead to long-term success and happiness. The idea that you can't afford coaching isn't about lacking funds; it's about undervaluing the long-term payoff of investing in yourself. The real barrier is the ingrained notion that spending on intangible growth is frivolous, a notion imposed by societal expectations that prioritize material gains over personal development.
Many people who have already spent tens of thousands of dollars on a traditional (outdated) college education – often finding it lacking in relevance to their specific needs – hesitate to invest in personalized one-on-one coaching. Yet, this type of coaching can potentially transform their entire career and life trajectory, provided it’s the right fit.
Our society values materialism and material values more than wellbeing, personal growth, or experience (such as in hobbies, travel, etc.). However, anything material can be taken from you quite easily, while no one can rob you of the memory of your experiences, your growth, and your transformation. You will have them with you for the rest of your life, and you can use them again, again, and again.
The belief that certain things are unaffordable often stems not from actual financial limitations but from subconscious programming and societal norms that dictate how we should prioritize our spending. Whether it's investing in coaching, taking a necessary break, or indulging in self-care, these choices are frequently dismissed due to an ingrained belief system that undervalues personal growth and well-being. It's crucial to recognize and challenge these beliefs, understanding that true affordability is not just about money but about recognizing the worth of investing in ourselves.
