In today’s society, it is unfortunate that many individuals born in privileged circumstances often believe that those who live in a constant state of struggle are there solely by their own volition. This pervasive belief in the ability to “pull oneself up by their bootstraps” is a gross misrepresentation of reality. It oversimplifies the complex socio-economic barriers that prevent many from achieving success and ignores the systemic inequalities that exist.
The Myth of Self-Reliance
The idea that anyone can achieve success through sheer willpower and determination is deeply ingrained in our cultural psyche. However, this narrative fails to acknowledge the immense challenges faced by those who are born into poverty or marginalized communities. For many, the sheer amount of energy required for survival precludes any effort to break free and rise above their circumstances. The lack of access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities creates a vicious cycle that is incredibly difficult to escape.
The Reality of Struggle
Most individuals struggling today have little to no opportunity for upward mobility. The barriers they face are not just personal but systemic, embedded in the very fabric of our society. From inadequate schooling to discrimination in the job market, the deck is stacked against them from the start. It is crucial to recognize that the playing field is not level and that success is often more a matter of circumstance than individual effort.
The Role of Privilege
The vast majority of those utilizing platforms like LinkedIn have numerous advantages working in their favor. Yet, many do not avail themselves of these opportunities to their fullest extent. It is essential to acknowledge the role that privilege plays in our successes. Those born into favorable zip codes often have access to better education, networking opportunities, and financial support, all of which can significantly impact their career trajectories.
While there is no ancient manifesto dictating that one must reach their greatest potential, there is a basic tenet that we shouldn’t squander what we are given. With privilege comes responsibility. It is incumbent upon those who have benefited from societal advantages to use their resources to help others. This means not only striving for personal success but also working to dismantle the barriers that hinder others.

The Golden Rule
There is one philosophical principle that, if applied generously in our lives, could change the very foundation of the world: “Do unto others as you would have done unto you.” This simple yet profound idea calls for empathy, understanding, and action. By putting ourselves in the shoes of others, we can better appreciate their struggles and be more inclined to offer support.
A Vision for Change
Imagine a world where empathy and compassion guide our actions. Where those with privilege actively work to create opportunities for those without. This vision requires a collective effort, a shift in mindset, and a commitment to equity. It means advocating for policies that promote social justice, supporting organizations that work towards economic mobility, and mentoring individuals who lack the resources to succeed on their own.
It is essential to move beyond the myth of self-reliance and recognize the complex realities of socio-economic struggle. By embracing our shared humanity and committing to the principle of treating others as we would wish to be treated, we can create a more just and equitable society. Let us use our platforms and privileges to lift others up and create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
This article was prompted when I committed a Post-on-Post crime Friday afternoon as Douglas Loyal Nerdahl had a terrific post concerning all men being created equal, but that doesn't necessarily mean they get an equal shot. Douglas was open about his privilege and the impact it had on his life. This post "triggered" a response as to my solidarity of belief in his post. My comment was extremely lengthy as a post goes, so I had to expand my thoughts.
So In my "comment" I apologized for the length of response and suggested I should probably write my own article. Douglas was kind and admitted he had committed such atrocities of his own in the past. He asked that I tag him if I followed through, and here I am, following through.
I trust if you've made it to the bottom of this article you are someone who understands how the "Myth of Self-Reliance" impacts everyone in our society and how those with the "Privilege" of true opportunity should make a concise effort to create systemic change that benefits everyone.
Take some time this afternoon to reflect on how you may be able to impact your small corner of the world and make a difference.
