In the burgeoning world of AI and Language Learning Models (LLMs), a concept has surfaced, gaining traction among enthusiasts and practitioners alike: prompt engineering.
From my standpoint, this notion appears as a buzzword-laden trend rather than a cornerstone of effective interaction with LLMs. Through various exhaustive interactions and experiments, I've observed that the essence of engaging with most LLMs lies not in crafting artificially engineered prompts, but in the simplicity and naturalness of the language used.
The belief in "prompt engineering" posits that carefully constructed prompts, embedded with "special keywords" or "codes," can somehow unlock or direct the AI's processing capabilities more effectively. Proponents argue that these complex prompts set the AI's mode, tuning it for specific responses. However, this perspective overlooks the fundamental design and intent behind LLMs: their ability to process and understand natural language as it is used in everyday communication.
In practice though, even the complex scenarios I've encountered have revealed no substantial need for "engineered" prompts. Whether for straightforward inquiries or more intricate requests, concise language, common vernacular, and straightforward formatting instructions have consistently yielded effective and coherent responses from LLMs. This observation aligns with the developers' intentions behind these sophisticated systems: to facilitate interaction through natural language inputs rather than through a contrived structuring of exposition.

Moreover, the concept of prompt engineering seems at odds with the inherent limitations and operational design of LLMs, particularly regarding session memory. The notion that an initial, complex prompt can permanently influence an LLM's responses in a lengthy interaction fails to account for the LLM's session memory window. This memory, by design, moves beyond the contents of the initial prompt after just a few cycles of interaction, rendering any supposed benefits of an engineered prompt moot. Large and complex prompts, which consume more session memory than the LLM can utilize for refining responses, quickly become inefficient and counterproductive.
Critically, the idea of prompt engineering suggests a misunderstanding of how LLMs are developed and intended to be used. It introduces an unnecessary layer of complexity that does not enhance the user's experience or the quality of the AI's responses. Instead, it perpetuates a "new-age AI fad" that finds little resonance among the developers of these technologies. They have crafted LLMs to engage with the richness and variability of human language, not to decode a set of artificially constructed cues.
I want to clarify that my critique does not extend to LLM features introduced by developers, which function as 'pre-processors.' These features, indeed, can establish 'modes' and intricate formatting rules. However, such 'modes' primarily influence the preprocessor's internal logic, not the core functionality of the LLM itself. These defined 'rules' are typically employed by scripts, macros, or other components in the codebase, leveraging the LLM's API. They craft a 'hidden prompt' behind the scenes, which is then submitted to the LLM as a proxy for the user.
In conclusion, the fascination with prompt engineering as a specialized discipline within AI interaction seems to be more a product of AI mystique than of tangible utility. The true power of LLMs lies in their capacity to understand and respond to natural language, making the artifice of prompt engineering an unnecessary embellishment. As we move forward, let us focus on harnessing the real strengths of LLMs through clear, natural communication, eschewing the allure of complex prompt construction for a more genuine and effective dialogue with AI.
