For years, statistical studies seemed to prove that the notion of the "hot hand" in sports - basketball in particular - was a myth.

Previous studies seemed to prove that the chances of a shooter making the next shot were unaffected by how many in a row the shooter had made or missed leading up to that shot, but now those studies have been turned on their ear.
