Myth of Coaching

Coaches are neither born nor made. Great coaches choose to be great coaches.

When Dr. Stephen Covey phrased this, what exactly he was having in his mind or why he said, Coaches are neither born nor made. Probably his deep understanding of the crux of the subject, which had eventually got manifold enhanced while coming close to Indian concept or practice of Coaching where he realized the piousness or divinity of this profession.

We all have had coaches who have helped us along the way, and more than likely, they were more than just a boss or a trainer. They could speak not only to our business habits and performance but also to our personal lives and our betterment as individuals. In fact, sometimes our best coaches are coworkers, spouses and friends-people without authority to speak organizationally but whom we trust to give us mentoring and advice.

when I reflect my personal work experience, easily get connected with this thought and start appreciating one of my ex. project head, who had personally taken interest in my holistic growth not just by imparting learning related to the various aspect of project execution. He not only apprise me on the concept of project finance but also tunneling , quality , concrete mixing with surprisingly training of performance management in power sector and even purchased many books from his pocket for all of us to get acquainted on the various aspect of civil engineering and hydro project execution. Further, he took major risk in deputing me only to engage in campus recruitment of civil and quality engineer. This visit was unique in the sense, my decisions were final in hiring those graduate engineers as after me, no further assessment were conducted. Such faith, trust, support & guidance made me ready to support the business in true sense. There is no need to tell that on personal front also, he took keen interest in developing us. Probably he and I both were not knowing that we were unknowingly in the relationship of Coach- Coachee with the thought of increasing my value to the business and significantly improving my life.

In the end, I feel, coaching is about positively impacting one person's mindset, heart and behaviours so that person is never the same again. It is about helping one person make the contribution only he or she can make in the world. If this is the case, do you think, you really need a trained coach who is recently born or made by the virtue of his certification, have chosen this career for the interest of his or herself is going to justify the role.

I am not an authority or the subject matter expert but a learner who experienced this divine touch in mind and soul at one point of time and looking forward to such more memorable exposure in future.
