The Myth of Being Busy

It was a hot July day, I was on the roof for my 4th time showing yet another technician how to do some basic wiring related to a floating actuator. I was busy, oh so busy.

What was I busy doing?

Installing? No

Programming? No

Selling? No

I was showing a technician how to do one of the most common tasks we do every day. Why?

Because I was "busy". Too busy to make time to train my people. I know, I know, this is a post telling you to use our training right? WRONG!

Just do these exact steps, not next month, or when "things slow down". Right friggin now!

  1. Identify your top 5 tasks that are done "all" the time
  2. Bring your staff in for a half day and hand them out written process sheets on how to do these tasks (bonus points if these are accessible online and have pictures/videos).
  3. Train your staff to do the tasks
  4. Drill the tasks until people can do them super quick and correctly

That's it. People are smart, your staff will pick this up in 1 to 2 sessions. And my friend you just freed up your senior (high dollar) techs.

Or you can just purchase training from us so you don't have to do all this (sorry, couldn't help myself...)

4 steps are good - also video your best tech doing the task - create a library of training videos

Well said Phil! It's amazing what spending a little bit of time (and money) upfront can save you on the back end, fixing the mistakes that could have been prevented with a little bit of training Fixing one mistake doesn't take that long, but fixing one mistake made a hundred times adds up quickly on a project
