The Mystery of the Sodder Children

On the night of December 24, 1945, a devastating fire engulfed the Sodder family home in Fayetteville, West Virginia, where George Sodder, his wife Jennie, and nine of their ten children resided. During the calamity, George, Jennie, and four children managed to escape; however, the remaining five children were never found. The initial investigation declared the fire an accident and speculated it was electrical due to recent rewiring of the house, a conclusion George disputed, suspecting arson and possibly implicating the Sicilian Mafia as a retaliatory act for his anti-fascist views.

Following the fire, no comprehensive search was conducted immediately, partly because George, in his grief, bulldozed the site five days later, intending to create a memorial garden, which complicated evidence gathering. Despite this, reports from four separate eyewitnesses in the days following the incident claimed to have seen human remains, which were never officially recorded or disclosed to the family.

In the 1950s, the Sodders, skeptical that their children had perished, erected a billboard along State Route 16 with their photos, offering a reward for information to resolve the case. This billboard stood until Jennie Sodder’s death in 1989. The Sodder family's ongoing belief that the children survived spurred various theories, although these were often overshadowed by rumors and conspiracies, including those suggesting Mafia involvement.

Further complicating the narrative, the property’s coal stockpile likely intensified the fire, suggesting the possibility that any trapped individuals could have been completely incinerated, although a later excavation in 1949 revealed a vertebra from a teenager, contradicting earlier claims that no remains were found. This discovery, however, couldn't definitively confirm the children's deaths due to incomplete evidence and the compromised investigation scene.
