Mystery Illness Strikes St. Teresa Eregi Girls High School: 95 Students Hospitalized, Investigations Underway

Parents of St. Teresa Eregi Girls High School in Kakamega County are being urged to remain calm as investigations are underway to determine the cause of an unknown illness that has led to the hospitalization of 95 students.

?

Kakamega County's CEC for Health, Bernard Wesonga, has reported that samples of blood, urine, and stool have been collected and sent to both the Kisumu laboratory and KEMRI Nairobi for extensive testing to identify the root cause of the outbreak.

?

Wesonga has also disclosed that among the 95 affected students, 20 are currently receiving treatment at Iguhu Hospital, 30 at Kakamega Referral Hospital, 31 at Mukumu Mission Hospital, and 14 at Shibwe Hospital. Some students are showing positive responses to medication, while others are still under medical care.

?

The students have exhibited symptoms of knee pain, resulting in difficulty walking. Test results are expected to be available tomorrow, at which point parents will be informed of the cause of the illness.

?

Obiero Jared, the Regional Director of Education, has reassured the public that the situation is being effectively managed and has debunked rumours that more than 100 students have been hospitalized.

?

He has emphasized the importance of improved communication between the school administration and parents, addressing concerns raised by many parents regarding communication barriers with school authorities.

?

Reports indicate that following a meeting of education and health stakeholders, some Form Three students went on a rampage and chased officials away from the institution.
