#MyDACCStory: Tyler C.
Danville Area Community College
Alumni Relations at Danville Area Community College formerly Danville Junior College
This week #MyDACCstory highlights Tyler C., an Applied Computer Science major who is enjoying his DACC experience the second time around.
Tyler says, “When I first attended DACC in 2013 I wasn’t fully attentive, I was easily distracted. I made a lot of bad decisions that led to me dropping out.” But things got better with some life changes and a second chance at college.
“I was accepted into the Second Chance Scholarship Program* and introduced to my mentor, DACC Chief Financial Officer Tammy Betancourt.” With Ms. Betancourt’s guidance and a helping hand from Professor Kathy Hunter, Tyler has been an honor student since his return. He has even been working as a tutor in the Business & Technology Tutoring center where he’s been able to help other students. With this new outlook, Tyler will complete his degree at the end of this summer.
Tyler says his most memorable moment at DACC was creating his first functional website from scratch. “It gave me a strong sense of pride in what I can do and what I might be able to accomplish further down the line.” He says if he could meet anyone he’d like to meet Tim Berners-Lee to discuss “the thought process that went into creating the web, the current state of the Internet, and the impact it has on society.”
As a biker, Tyler says he’s happiest when he can ride his bike through trails on a warm summer day, and his perfect day would include “a morning bike ride, knocking out all my work during the day, a big dinner, and spending time with my family and my girlfriend.” His favorite movie is The Crow, and his favorite artist is James Wan.
When asked why he felt DACC was the right fit for him, Tyler replied, “DACC is close to home, affordable, has small class sizes, and has dedicated instructors that go above and beyond to work with me and make sure that I’m meeting my goals.”
Good luck, Tyler. We’re so proud you’ve made the most of your second chance!
