Morena,

Last night Will Smith slapped the SHIT out of Chris Rock.

The Internet Exploded!!!!!!!

I may not agree with slapping another man face with millions watching but when it comes to defending your loved ones I can understand the predicament of where Will found himself.

After digesting overnight and zooming out a lil - here’s a few questions I’ve been wondering :

  1. If it was Kanye West who got up and physically assaulted the MC what would have happened? Would we all have acted the same way? I can GUARANTEE you he wouldn’t have been allowed to sit back down and the show just continue on.
  2. Wills speech was 6 minutes longer and NO ONE tried to play music over him. Why? What’s the lesson here?
  3. What if Will didn’t win? Would it have been less acceptable of an act of aggression?
  4. Is there ever a point where ‘violence’ is justified? If so - is this it?
  5. No charges are being filed so if Will Smith can get up, assault someone in front of millions because his feelings got hurt - does this now make it ok for others to do the same in the future? To stand up, interrupt public events and lay hands on another human because you couldn’t control your emotions? Is this a new precedent we have all just given the greenlight by standing up and applauding? Does this make violence of any type ‘ok’?

My key takeaway :

A 30 year dedicated career of positivity, love and goodness can be instantly overshadowed in 30 seconds.?And forever scarred with that 30 seconds.

‘A moment can make or break a movement’.

Ironically enough, this self proclaimed ‘vessel of love’ was hypocritically the same vessel that 30 minutes earlier brought uncontrolled anger and unleashed physical violence to another man with the world watching.

For right or wrong - Will’s Legacy will now forever be tied to a moment of rage.?

Even though he may have won the award - if we zoom out - I don’t think ANYONE won here.?

Not the comedic MC who’s job was to jab the guests to lighten up the evening.

Not the wife who was once again ridiculed on the same platform by the same person.

And not the ‘Winner’ who LOST his cool in front of all.

Actually, the ONLY winner here was the ratings, the advertisers and the network who can exploit a public persons moment of weakness for the good old commercial dollar - (but that’s a story/vent for another time).

#My3Cents.?

I'm possibly the only one saying this ..... but, ( If this wasn't a publicity stunt ) Chris Rock was doing his job. I find any violence wrong, whether it's Wil Smith or not. What's he like behind closed doors when he loses his cool? I really like Wil Smith and Chris Rock, but I can't defend this type of behavior.

Jada showed up! Owned her alopecia and left with her dignity intact. That's the convo! Yet everyone is focused on the two men who behaved like children.

Why was he laughing to begin with... should he slap himself for laughing til his wife said something. Her face was thunder while he was guffawing. Then "oh no" and slip, slop, slap and yes, what precedent does it set? Or like Naomi Campbell and Russell Crowe will we forget those transgressions in time as they disappear into history. Wait til Putin nukes America, then we'll all forget the slap.

There was an interview with Anthony Mackie (Falcon in the Marvel movies) a couple of years ago where he argued that men should respond exactly this way when someone says something to or about their wife. I think it's interesting that Smith's initial response was to laugh it off until he looked over at his wife's expression and then I think he felt pressured by into making a big show for the cameras to try and live up to the kind of masculine ideal espoused by guys like Mackie. Definitely seems very out of character for him and it's a shame because at the end of it he didn't appear more of a man. Getting up on stage and calling Chris Rock out for what was really a very poor joke about an obvious health issue would have carried a lot more weight and earned him a lot more respect I think.
