My Year In Review

My Year In Review

When this year began I was in a completely different place to where I am now. I was living in a one bedroom flat with my boyfriend and my cat working in a small PR agency in Edinburgh.

Sounds ideal, but actually it wasn't.

Don't get me wrong I wasn't unhappy I just knew I needed more. On a complete whim I applied for the Mountbatten program in January, my friend had experienced it before me and she had the time of her life - I wanted a slice of that.

It was one of those decisions that you feel won't go anywhere but if you didn't apply for it you would be annoyed at yourself.

Little did I know I would be in London being interviewed by the team a few months later, to then being on the phone in an alleyway in Glasgow finding out I had been offered a job at Thomson Reuters located on, the one and only Times Square.

What just happened? My world had been turned upside down within months, this small bubble of normality had been burst and a wave of crazy washed over me.

Now, I live in New Jersey I share a room with one of the most lovely and positive people I have ever met - who honestly I cannot live without and I've only known her 4 months. I commute to Times Square every single day, I walk up Broadway, I pass Macy's and I pick my coffee up from a girl who has learned my order and name. I saunter into my building and start my day the same every day, and it is only until writing this do I realise how lucky I am.

Sometimes you have to mix things up a little bit (or a lot) to realise you can achieve more and you can do things you never thought you were capable of.

In January I would never have imagined living in New York, working for a fantastic company and becoming so close to a wonderful bunch of misfits on the Mountbatten program.

But hey, that's life.

I tell you what, I am thoroughly looking forward to 2018.

P.s my cat is fine she is being looked after by family friends, I will see her when I return to the UK - just in case you were wondering.

Really pleased it is all working out for you - would you like to be part of the ESMS New York Whats App group so that you can stay in touch with some of the alumni whom you had hoped to meet up with in October?
