My wish for the Premier League
Football fans can't help but be excited about the Premier League season ahead. As one of the voices on Premier League Preview for a tenth season, I believe it could be the best yet, with Conte, Guardiola, Mourinho and Klopp doing battle with the likes of Pochettino, Wenger, Bilic, Koeman and defending champion Ranieri. Apologies for not mentioning any Englishmen there!
But my wish for this season is that new rules on dissent and abuse of referees is stuck to rigidly. No more close-ups of snarling and fury - and a few red cards in those opening two weeks should see it stamped out - if only because managers will start to Instill that culture of respect to keep their best 11 on the field.
Being a rugby union fan I would love the ten yard rule put in place too but if refs carry this through it should have the same effect.
So that's my greatest wish - there are two others - pipedreams right now! I would also like a rule on holding at corners being outlawed although that is a nettle yet to be grasped. So is the possibility of referees being interviewed, or as Henry Winter suggested in The Times, let them air their explanations to the media via Twitter at least. With the added protection referees are getting, they should expect to be more accountable.
Meantime, let the drama unfold!
