MY WIFE'S HAT

If you know her, you won't be surprised.
She found a new cap that resonated deeply with her. Her eyes gleamed when she showed it to me, and I immediately understood why. The inscription read:
LOVE HER BUT LEAVE HER WILD!
?In our 22 years of marriage, I’ve made many mistakes, but one stands out that I’ve learned to let go of the unconscious belief that I had some proprietary interest in her simply because I’m her husband.
Most men I know are protective of their spouse, and this is good to a point. Protecting someone you love is a natural response in a relationship. Protecting children who cannot protect themselves is essential, but how protective do we need to be of someone who took care of themselves long before we met?
The more pertinent question is, when does a sense of protection morph into a sense of ownership? It happens more often than most of us are willing to admit, and it affects both men and women. This is the space where jealousy can take root.
?A deeper truth is that if you truly love someone, with as few conditions as possible, you will allow them to be themselves, wild and free from your constraints. This does not mean endorsing infidelity or anything unkind.
It’s akin to the analogy of a beautiful and spirited horse, whether mare or stallion, allowed to roam free, tethered only by love. The American Mustang is a mythic symbol of freedom, heroism, trust, confidence, romance, and limitless possibilities. It embodies the untamed spirit allowed to BE.
?We grow mutually when we support each other's growth and freedom of spirit, especially in marriage.
The process is simple: believe in them, support them, allow them to be who they are, be emotionally available, and give them the space to become who and what they want.

In loving each other this way, we don’t just coexist; we flourish, rooted in freedom and bound by love.
