My week with Chat GPT

My week with Chat GPT

Probably like you, I'm constantly enamored by shiny tools that promise to make me more productive and efficient. My latest whirl was with Chat GPT, and it's by far my new favorite. I've played with it a bit in the past, but this week, committed to giving it a serious test drive. Could it help me with just about everything

Honestly? Yes.

In that time, I used Chat GPT to:

  • edit text for a slide presentation
  • compose about 10 different emails
  • complete a few questions on a grant application
  • choose a color scheme for our patio furniture
  • plan our summer vacation, and most importantly
  • create my daily schedule.

Here's what I learned:

AI isn't perfect. It's up to us humans to give it clear and specific prompts. For instance, for the daily schedules, I couldn't just give it a list of tasks. Instead, I gave it the tasks, their difficulty, their priority, my meeting schedule, and -- here's the key -- an honest synopsis of my work habits (i.e. the stuff I like to procrastinate on). That resulted in a pretty awesome daily scheduler, which I was then able to tweak as needed throughout the day. 9am Jen makes promises that 1pm Jen can't keep, and the AI helped me account for that.

It also eliminated the time I spent staring at a blinking cursor, thanks to its language generating capabilities. It can dabble in creativity, too. When I wanted to choose a color scheme for our patio furniture, it provided a starting point which I then took to Pinterest. And for our upcoming vacation, it offered some interesting suggestions based on our travel style and rough schedule, which I then customized further.

All in all, it was a good week, thanks to our new robot overlords! I'll do it again next week for sure.

P.S. Confession time - this post was also written with the help of Chat GPT. While I provided the overall structure and tone, it helped me generate some of the specific language, which I then edited. It ended up taking me about 15 minutes total, vs the 30 or so it would have normally taken.
