My Way Into The Cycling Industry

I pedaled in all sorts of circumstances for years, but never thought of joining the bike industry. On one hand, all I could see were bike shops, and being in management positions already in early years of my work life, I knew I wouldn't be happy with downshifting. On the other hand, I was very cautious of mixing passion with the job.

I couldn’t avoid the second one though. After years of working in marketing, advertising and design for different industries and areas, I felt like I’ve exhausted my options. Frustration and tiredness was my number 1 feeling when I thought of work.

Changing break pads when working in the bike store

At that time I had a small interior design firm and I just suspended it because I wasn’t happy with what I was doing. It was at the beginning of summer. I went to a nearby bike store to buy an inner tube and saw the owner jammed with all the work alone in a 250 m2 shop. The idea came to me right there: “I can help you, if you want. I’ve suspended my firm and I need to rest. I love bikes so it can be a great way to reset my mind.”. He was worried he couldn’t pay me enough, but I just didn’t care. It was just something I wanted to do for pleasure.

It was such a thrill to hang around nice bikes all day long, help with some mechanical work, and talk to the cycling enthusiasts. Visitors were of course very surprised seeing a woman with tools in hands, but for me it was an endless joy.?

Just crewing those screws was so satisfying!

Two months passed fast but I felt sorrow when thinking of going back to any of the stuff I did before. I was seriously considering becoming a full-time bike mechanic at that moment, but it didn’t happen. I got introduced to the Polish distributor of Superior bikes and engaged in marketing activities for the Polish market. It was a base level job with a budget of 0, but I had great bikes around and I knew that I needed to take this step to start working my way into the industry. Of course, no development led to boredom and need for change, but it was an issue with the company, not the industry.?

I wanted to be closer to where everything is actually happening. I sent out my CV to any company I could recall or find, but no one wrote back. Of course, giving a level of distrust towards the outsiders, especially women, I couldn’t expect much. But I also couldn’t give up.?

One day, when I was cycling in Spain, some guy contacted me and proposed a call about a job in the bike industry. It was Daniel Glaubitz , founder of biciTALENT Recruitment and a great person, who basically got me on board of the beloved industry. We worked together for 1,5 years on recruitment projects. At the same time, being a born marketer and a problem fixer, I just had to give the biciTALENT brand a push, so I did.

I really loved working with biciTALENT, but I needed to buyild something on my own

Helping build its brand awareness reminded me of how much I love marketing and advertising. And now I was in the environment where I could do it with a huge satisfaction, for brands that have a special place in my heart. This understanding gave me motivation to create M4C Marketing 4C .

Thank you for sharing your story and, above all, the feelings you felt that pushed you to change/evolve. Truly an experience to meditate on and perhaps a spark to demolish comfort zone cages.
