My Wardrobe Story - Dr. Hemant

Dr. Hemant is a 53-year-old Fine Arts professional who is a part of a joint family where he lives with his beloved wife and two daughters. He has been a first-hand witness to the changing ways in which our wardrobes are connected to us. Functioning in a joint family all through his earlier years, Hemant remembers sharing a wardrobe with his mother. That meant only a fraction of space for his belongings in that cupboard.

The distinct smell of naphthalene balls stacked in her wardrobe to save the clothes from infesting are a powerful memory that surfaces everyone he thinks of his wardrobe as a child.

Sharing a designated space with his mother to store his things brought them closer at some level. Hemant believes sufficient storage space like drawers, hanging space and shelves bring out the true worth of a wardrobe. From owning limited shelf space in his mother’s cupboard to being the sole owner of a whole cupboard, Hemant chuckles how things have escalated.

When he compares the wardrobe he used as a kid to what he uses now, it is amazing for him to see how times have changed. Today he uses a cupboard that features a very pleasant look and synchronizes with the decor of the room it has been installed in. From the utility perspective too things seem to have graduated, and for the better.

He often stocks his cupboard with valuable stuff like watches, expensive perfumes, his collection of wine bottles and other items of significant value to him.

Once, after returning from a long trip, Hemant realized that he had misplaced keys to his wardrobe. This incident made him realize the significance that the wardrobe holds in his life. He feels today wardrobes are primarily used for arranging clothing items in the order and storing other personal items. He often stocks his cupboard with valuable stuff like watches, expensive perfumes, his collection of wine bottles and other items of significant value to him.
