My Vivid Vision

My Vivid Vision

VIVID VISION:

I picked up this concept from my friend Cameron Herold a few years ago. Since then he’s expanded it into a full-fledged book, which I highly recommend you pick up*: https://amzn.to/2OGuDsi

The concept is fairly simple:

1. Get super-clear (vivid) about where you are heading and where you want to be. This can apply to your life, your company, or both.

2. Bring the vision to life in vivid detail (write it down).

3. Communicate it to the world.

An amazing thing happens when you’re clear about your vision and you let the world know about it: people and resources start coming your way to help that vision come true.

Below is my Vivid Vision for my life, which I recently revisited. I’ve blurred it out and I didn’t include a couple of pages because it’s still being refined, but when it’s ready it will be available for all to see. It describes, in very vivid detail, what I want my life to look like, in all aspects: my work, my play, my relationships, my family, my health and more.

As the saying goes, “If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there” - unless you’re clear about what you want, then there is no clear path.

I’ve done this process both for myself and for my companies. Defining my Vivid Vision makes it so much easier to make decisions. Almost everything that doesn’t align with the vision is a ‘no’, and anything that moves me closer to the vision is up for consideration and often acted upon.

The same goes with your company staff - if they know exactly where you want to take the company, then they know when to say no and when to say yes, and more importantly, they can get excited by your vision and they can figure out how best to support the vision and which aspects they feel best able to support.

It will also help take a lot of reverse-delegation off your plate - this is when your staff delegate everything up to you: they’re afraid of making the wrong decision so they send everything your way for your advice or signoff. Pretty soon you’re bombarded with decisions, you spend your day explaining yourself, and you can’t make the important ones any more.

With a clear Vivid Vision in place, your staff will know how to make a lot of decisions without your input. This is because they have a clear idea of whether those decisions will move the company toward or away from the vision.

Your Vivid Vision should describe every aspect of the company: Who are your customers? What do your revenues look like? Profit? Customer #s? Where is your office and what does it look like? What awards have you received? Who have you hired? What do operations look like? Sales? Marketing? Finances?

Describe everything as vividly - and ideally as visually - as possible. When you can picture it all in your mind’s eye, your staff, customers, and suppliers will be able to as well, and that will kickstart their imaginations to help you achieve that vision.

Thanks again Cameron Herold for this beautiful concept.
