My Vivid Contrast Experience


A vivid contrast experience that lights my path serving leaders.?

In the formative years of my career, I had up an up close and personal experience with a world famous case of business leadership extremes.

In this extreme case, we had Kimberly Clark led by Darwin Smith, Wayne Sanders, Tom Fork versus Scott Paper, led by Al ‘Chainsaw’ Dunlap.

We had in the extremes, building people and systems to remain fit for purpose versus narrow, focused value extraction.

This case study brought a lot of public attention and if you're curious for more on it, I'd really recommend checking out Jim Collins ‘Good to Great’, particularly Chapter Two. And to search Al ‘Chainsaw’ Dunlap, you'll find a myriad of colourful feature stories.

In my experience, I was with Kimberly Clark, as a leader at the time of the integration of Scott Paper into the Kimberly Clark global community. And I worked with the Malaysian leadership team. They were a lovely, hospitable people. And we found behind the scenes that in this workplace there was exhausted teams, fragile systems, low trust networks, and quite frankly, flaky performance measurement. It was all theatre.
