My Vision and Mission

After the start of a new year and semester, the Gossett Fellows kicked off their first meeting of 2022 focusing on our vision statements, mission statements, and top values. Although I’ve always had a general idea of who I want to be and what I want to accomplish in my future, I had never put it into words to give myself a clear idea of the path I want to follow. While thinking of my top values was like second nature, compacting my vision and mission statements into one sentence was the exact opposite. Doing this was not as simple as I had anticipated it to be, and challenged me to take some time to truly analyze what is important to me.

After much thought, I created statements that proudly represent who I am. My vision statement is as follows: “I will become a healthcare professional who is committed to serving others within my community, with a focus on minimizing health disparities and leaving a lasting positive impact on others.” This statement really summarizes what is important to me and what I plan to achieve within my future career. Much of my coursework within my major of Public Health Science has taught me so much about how different groups are impacted by specific health outcomes, especially in minority groups and underserved communities. Race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, living environment, and more all play an important role in the extent to which an individual’s health can be affected. Much of this is due to the lack of finding a solution to prevent these disparities and providing equitable care to all individuals. I plan to work towards minimizing these issues in my future career. The impact I leave on others is so important to me as well, which is why it was included in my vision. As I stated before, I want this impact to be positive and to inspire others to do the same and I believe that can be done through my actions. Spreading goodness is contagious and is possible when your work is done with passion.?

My mission statement is: “My purpose will be to constantly keep learning and challenging myself to be better than I was before, using the skills that I gain through my various work experiences in different environments to provide the highest level of care possible to patients.” I’m a firm believer that there is always room to learn and improve, regardless of position and years of experience. This is especially true while working in the healthcare field with the constant flow of innovation and technology. Being open to challenges and learning in my long process of becoming a skilled healthcare professional will allow me to grow as an individual while reaching all the goals I have manifested through my vision statement.?

Without values, my vision and mission statement would not be able to exist. My top three are drive, positivity, and mindfulness. Drive proves commitment to reaching your goals, positivity will help spread kindness and motivation, and mindfulness will constantly keep you aware of how all that you do can have an impact on those around you. While keeping all of these in mind, my vision is ten times more possible.?

This Gossett Fellows meeting challenged me to think a lot deeper about what is important to me, and taught me a lot about myself. I encourage you all to take a moment to consider your vision and mission statements, and potentially learn a bit about yourself as well.
