My VFX Blog gets Listed 29 out 60 VFX Blogs to Follow in 2021
Patrick Woo Ker Yang
Technical Artist, Visual Effects Artist, Consultant, Freelance VFX Supervisor, Educator, Mentor, and Music Composer
A little more than 10 years ago, shortly after I joined Dneg in London and was then located in Singapore, I had this idea to start a blog writing about my journey of exploration into the VFX world and to share some news and resources with the visual effects community. I also thought it was a way for non-VFX folks to peer into the world of visual effects.
The blog was underwhelmingly entitled Patrick's VFX Blog.
In the 10 years that follow, I populated the blog with posts from whatever I was doing that was VFX related. There was no theme to the posts. At first, it was a lot of industry news, resources. In some of the posts I bought some gears and I posted those in too. Then I started posting my showreels of movies after they got released as well as tutorials about various topics that became relevant to me at various points in my career. About 3 years ago I began posting more personal pieces and various tests that I thought to engage in.
A month ago, my student (Shivam Upadhyay 3dsense DVE50) spotted a website that lists 60 top blogs to follow in 2021. At that time my blog was ranked 44, and I was super excited and encouraged to have my blog listed up there with the likes of Allan McKay, VFX Soldier, cmiVFX, Andrew Kramer of Video Copilot, etc. I did not know there was a website for blogs.

I was of the impression that the article was finished and was not going to update. Then just today, another student from the same class that I teach (Mint Ong 3dsense DVE50) pointed me to the same page, and to my pleasant surprise, my blog shot up to 29th place.
It is a pleasant surprise to me, even though I don't see this accolade as anything that my blog should deserve. But it does serve to encourage me to continue updating and feeding posts to my blog :)
