My Vegetable Garden 2021!
My garden is a 4.5' x 8' plot of soil on a sunny spot in my back yard. I started my garden project during the pandemic It was a disaster since I invested $30 in plants and fertilizer with a return on investment of less than $1 worth of tomatoes and cucumbers. The squirrels got most of my harvest.
This year, we started late but much smarter after learning our lessons. We only planted vegetable that comply to 3 principles.
1. It must grow as fast as weeds.
2. We must like it for dinner.
3. The squirrel gang and deer families must not like it.
So we planted chives, red stripe amaranth (or chinese spinach), ginger, snap beans, and scallions.
This appeared to be a formula for success since we have already harvested scallions and chives once for our dinner table. I think we can harvest chives every ten days because they grow like weeds. They went well as egg omelets.
Tomorrow, I will plant winter melon seeds.
Wish me luck!

3 年I have to say, maybe California is more suitable to have a vegetable garden. My sister just had a harvest of chive, garlic, carrot, lettuce, potato, cucumber and some kind of beans.

3 年Annette. My garden is doing well and gives me quite a bit of pleasure to watch these plants growing up from their seedlings. I should be able to harvest the chives and the Amaranths every ten days. What a pleasure to produce something useful from mother nature. Michael

3 年We do have wild brown rabbits in our yard, many deers, and even a red fox one time. I am not sure rabbits would eat chives

3 年So far, the squirrel gang showed no interest on my young plants. The weeds are popping up daily. It is an endless battle.
