My two cents on the Corona impact for B School students

MY INTERACTION WITH B SCHOOL STUDENTS

I have spent 20% of my time in the last 8 months in some form of engagement with B School students - and have directly interacted with 2500+ students in the form of live projects, internships, competition, guest lecture, workshops, LinkedIn conversations etc.

I have observed a lot of students posting about cancellation of their internships as well as anxiousness w.r.t the impact on the placement season later this year.

My thoughts:

1.     Do not go searching for answers from corporate professionals. This situation is unprecedented and new for everyone.

And remember, someone is the corporate has more complicated issues to deal with and would not be your right information source.

2.     Everyone talks about taking the opportunity to learn. I agree whole-heartedly.

I realize it is difficult to focus on learning with all the chaos around us.

Take small steps. Mix it up. Do a course on business communication. Follow that up with a course on Python. Do not let it get boring.

3.     Also – teach others. Conduct a webinar. Share your learning. Make a YouTube Video.

From personal experience – I have best learnt topics only when I have tried to explain it to others.

4.     Also – please share your work. Build a portfolio. Do not engage in a conversation with any corporate professional unless you have a list of 10 things to ask + a portfolio of 5 projects to showcase.

For example if you are interested in a data analyst role – I would love to see 5 dashboards you have created.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE DUST SETTLES?

It will be a new-normal. We can’t say. We don’t know. But we can equip ourselves for it.

At the risk of beating a dead horse – I will still say it. As I want to drive the point home.

Please, please take chances.

Whatever little bit of success I have had in my life – I owe to perseverance, even when everything seemed dark.

If I stopped working on my ideas every time someone criticized OR the going got tough, I would have made nothing of myself.

I may not be the pearls of wisdom or the ray of sunshine you seek – but if a conversation can help you get some direction, I am always available at:

Thanks for providing the insights sir! The only thing is that being students, we don't realise these things and may need someone to guide us...but the way you presented the scenario clarified a lot...??
