My Tribute to Motherhood

To celebrate Mother's Day this week I was invited to share my perspective on how to balance motherhood and my career. It was supposed to be a short paragraph for a post, but I kept writing – Inspired by my son, to whom I am dedicated to being a better person - every day - and by how passionate I feel about the work I do – so this article was born.

Almost three years ago, I welcomed my son <3. By the time he was one year old I joined Lalamove Brazil. We were just starting the operations here and a few months later, we were launching our operation in Mexico. Craziness. A good one, because I love this sort of adrenaline.

Working on a fast-paced and exciting environment and facing the challenges of being a first-time mom, I felt it was a thrilling experience, to say the least!! 

It is a hard-won to balance it all: being a mom, an HR Executive, a wife and, of course, not forgetting of being “just” me.

Motherhood taught me how to be more generous towards myself and others, to improve expectations management, after all, motherhood lesson number one should be “don’t have expectations”. I have learned I could not do everything by myself, so I had to say “no” sometimes and ask for help when more arms and brains were needed.

Some people might think it is an exaggeration, but I can relate all those attributes to my day to day at work. The intensity and ambiguity of a “startup life” ask professionals to be more adaptable and collaborative.

Having the generosity to assume that the others are doing their best was my “Eureka” – this does not mean you are overlooking incompetence.

I live my life and lead my team having the serenity to accept that it is OK to put down the plates for a while when it is necessary. So, in the next moment, we can come back and pick them all up again or just choose the ones that suits our needs and priorities.

To my wonderful son, thank you for all the learnt and growth. Mommy loves you to the moon and back, many, many times.
