I know that studying can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Use the tips below to better prepare for a quiz or exam and reduce your negative thoughts about your academic performance.
Explain Your Answers
One of the top study methods is to explain your answers to another person, such as a study partner or family member. When you have to explain the answer, you can gain more clarity about the answer itself. Moreover, as you explain the answer, you might realize that there are some areas where you need to study more.
Take a Break
Research finds that taking breaks can increase your ability to focus. Sometimes when you study for long periods of time you become tired and feel like you are retaining information effectively when you are not. Walk away from your books, notes, and computer, and go on a walk or engage in an activity that you enjoy. Go back to studying when you feel that you can concentrate better.
Stop the Negative Self-Talk
Have you ever told yourself that you will perform poorly on an assignment, test, or quiz and then do perform poorly? I know many students who speak to themselves negatively, such as in telling themselves that they will not do well with their school work. Stop the negative self-talk and think about past successes to remind you that you do have what it takes to master the material!
Good luck in your studies!
