My top picks for Advertising Week Europe 16-18th May

My top picks for Advertising Week Europe 16-18th May

As the capital starts to calm down after the coronation celebrations, it’s time to build excitement once more as Advertising Week returns to its London home for three days of engaging, inspirational and educational sessions encompassing every aspect of the media industry.?

With so many sessions, and so much choice, it’s hard to decide what to pencil into your diary, so to help you build that list, here are some of my picks. I’ll be trying to attend as many sessions as possible, but these are the ones that I’m definitely not going to miss.

Kicking off the week in spectacular style, and reminding us that it’s a Rugby World Cup year, we have Gabby Logan and Ugo Monye taking to the Great Minds Stage to discuss the importance and evolution of Storytelling in Sport. With sports advertising showing no signs of slowing down, this will be a great session to kick-off Advertising Week Europe.

Storytelling in Sport: Tuesday 16 May 09:20 Great Stage 1

While the Covid pandemic hit us all hard and turned our industry upside down, there are always lessons to be learned through adversity. That’s why the Leadership Through and Coming Out of Covid session on Tuesday morning has sparked my interest. How did leaders in our industry motivate their teams in times of economic, societal and personal turmoil? And how did we maintain communication and collaboration in a completely new working world? I can’t wait to hear the discussions around these questions and many more.?

Leadership Through and Coming Out of Covid: Tuesday 16 May 10:30 Stage 5

Do brands have a responsibility to the consumers that buy their products and services? I think they do, and according to Interbrand, the most influential global brands have taken on a leadership role, investing in high standards in terms of products and customer experience, while creating an expectation of brand integrity from consumers. The Decade of Possibility, presented by Interbrand, will discuss the role that brands play as leaders, and how this new super-league of global brands can make positive social impacts.

The Decade of Possibility: A New Paradigm in Brand Growth and Leadership: Tuesday 16 May 12:00 Stage 5?

While Ronnie Scott’s might conjure up images of late night jazz, it’s a great place to kick off day two of Advertising Week Europe. Early birds who drop by this iconic Soho venue at 8am, will be treated to an engaging discussion around social media and the pressures it puts on both creators and consumers. The Vibe Shift, presented by June Sarpong, will challenge the status quo and the pressure to be perfect, while discussing what our future online profiles and experiences may look like.?

The Vibe Shift: From Perfectly Polished to Raw and Real: Wednesday 17 May 08:00

As someone who’s worked in media and advertising for more years than I care to admit, it’s fascinating to see how brand positioning and communication has changed over the years. These days any brand looking to build awareness needs to communicate directly with consumers and the communities that they congregate in. Cultivating Community for Business Growth is presented by Whalar, and will discuss how brands can build long-term, loyal relationships with communities and the people that inhabit them.?

Cultivating Community for Business Growth: Wednesday 17 May 10:45 Stage 4

Stop me if you’ve heard this one - A Social Publisher, Creator and Advertiser Walk Into a Bar… While the name of this session alone is enough to make me want to attend, I’m also fully expecting a thought provoking discussion around the future of social media and how it can continue to help brands tap into new audiences.

A Social Publisher, Creator and Advertiser Walk Into a Bar…: Wednesday 17 May 11:30 Stage 4

Breaking into new markets with new products is both exciting and difficult, and understanding the cultural nuances in new markets can be the difference between success and failure. Culture-Led Innovation: A Story About Modern African Energy is a not-to-be-missed session highlighting that understanding local culture can define how to win over new markets. Lee Geraghty from Jump! Innovation and Claire McFerran from Heineken, will be telling the incredible story of energy drink, Zagg, and how that cultural understanding helped create a product inspired by the joyful spirit of African youth.
