My "TOP 54 at 54": Lessons for Success and Happiness

I just had an incredible 54th Birthday and Father's Day weekend, during which I took the time to reflect back on my five decades of life and come up with a 'Top 54' list of ideas and concepts that can lead to a life of success, happiness and fulfillment.

My "Top 54 at 54" Concepts for Success and Happiness in Life


  1. Take ownership of your life's journey and the choices you make. Don't blame others.... practice massive accountability.
  2. Prioritize your physical and mental well-being. "The first person you lead is YOU!"
  3. Set clear and achievable goals both long term (years from now) as well as short term (tomorrow and this week). Write them down.
  4. Take consistent action towards your goals. (Develop positive and productive habits ... And review your progress frequently.)
  5. Practice gratitude daily.
  6. Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. "Iron sharpens Iron."
  7. Embrace failure as a learning opportunity.
  8. Take calculated risks and step outside your comfort zone. It's where growth happens.
  9. Learn from your mistakes (your best 'teacher') and make improvements.
  10. Cultivate a strong work ethic and be disciplined.
  11. Everything in moderation.
  12. Practice effective communication and active listening.
  13. Manage your time efficiently and prioritize tasks. ("Eat the Frog")
  14. Take care of your financial health and practice budgeting. Live within your means and remember to invest for your future.
  15. Embrace simplicity and avoid unnecessary complexity.
  16. Don't sweat the small stuff.
  17. Practice mindfulness and be present in the moment.
  18. Focus on building meaningful and authentic relationships.
  19. Practice empathy and compassion towards others. Be Kind.
  20. Set healthy boundaries and learn to say no when necessary.
  21. Take care of your physical health through regular exercise and proper nutrition.
  22. Cultivate a positive mindset and practice positive self-talk.
  23. Practice resilience in the face of challenges and setbacks.
  24. Laugh more.
  25. Live in alignment with your purpose, core values and principles.
  26. Prioritize what's most important in life... your family. Money comes and goes and there will always be more work to do. Focus on what truly matters.
  27. Take breaks and allow yourself time for rest and recovery.
  28. Have an 'abundance mindset'. There's plenty of success to go around for everyone to enjoy.
  29. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small.
  30. Practice forgiveness and let go of grudges.
  31. Focus on what you can control and let go of what you can't.
  32. Take responsibility for your own emotions and reactions to circumstances.
  33. Journal, practice self-reflection and learn from your experiences.
  34. Ask for help when necessary. You really can't do it all by yourself.
  35. Take steps to manage and reduce stress in your life.
  36. Continuously seek new knowledge and skills.
  37. Embrace diversity and appreciate different perspectives.
  38. Avoid comparing yourself to others and focus on your own journey.
  39. Love more, give more, help more. Be the 'light' in someone's darkness.
  40. Develop a High-Power Morning Routine as well as focus on your 'sleep hygiene'.
  41. Set realistic expectations for yourself and others.
  42. Seek feedback and be open to constructive criticism.
  43. Practice active decision-making and avoid indecisiveness.
  44. Learn to adapt to change and embrace uncertainty.
  45. Give back by mentoring and teaching others who can benefit from your wisdom.
  46. Don't take yourself too seriously.
  47. Keep your commitments and honor your word.
  48. Practice humility and embrace lifelong learning.
  49. Avoid dwelling on the past and focus on the present.
  50. Seek harmony and balance in all areas of your life.
  51. Connect more with nature. Get outside.
  52. Foster a sense of humor and find joy in everyday moments... the little things truly matter the most.
  53. Try to improve by 1% each and everyday.
  54. Remember that happiness is a journey, not a destination!
