My top 5 tips for business leaders to thrive in 2021

My top 5 tips for business leaders to thrive in 2021

With 2020 so enthusiastically put in the bin on 31 December, there is much excitement and anticipation about what 2021 will bring. However there is still uncertainty, change and fear.

Here are my top 5 tips for business leaders to thrive in 2021.

  1. Flexibility – the only certainty for this year is the uncertainty that lies ahead. We can’t predict what will happen, but as a leader you can predict and plan for how you and your team will respond to whatever happens.
  2. Be real – the crisis is not yet over, and as a leader your team still look to you and to your example. Being genuine, open, honest and transparent remains as important in 2021 as it was in 2020. Your teams look to you to get through the crisis, to set a high standard and to step up to make tough decisions when necessary. Leaders who have done these things are well place to build on the trust created last year to grow and enhance their business.
  3. Focus – the determination to succeed and achieve goals remains as a relevant now as it always has. Many leaders worked hard on their business during the pandemic, and now is the time to re-double efforts to achieve and exceed goals. These are goals, that may require a change of plan or direction along the way, but which the whole organisation is working towards. Leaders need to remind their teams of the goals, and live the steps to achieve them every day.
  4. Reflect – as a leader reflect on what you did in 2020, what worked and what didn’t. Incorporate changes that worked for you and your business into the culture and fabric of your organisation.  Whether it is flexible or remote working, changed systems, or use of technology, all these learnings are still relevant now and will enhance your business. Adapt and continue to improve methods of work, processes and systems.
  5. A sense of humour – take the chance to laugh or smile when the opportunity arises, as it will make up for the tears shed along the way.

I have seen many leaders step up and meet the challenges over the past 12 months. There are many challenges that we will face in 2021, however by learning from what has been experienced and having the correct mindset leaders again have an opportunity to shine in the success of their business.

Great to hear your thoughts, and goals for 2021!
