My Top 5 Tips for BDM To Get Things Done

Life as a BDM can be hectic, overwhelming, but oh so rewarding.

On a daily basis, BDM needs to wear multiple hats to ensure all their clients get replies and consultation in a timely manner. Sometimes they even need to wear two hats at the same time. People who take this path don’t do it so they can work fewer hours or focus only on the aspects they like. Actually, being a BDM means working more hours and finding creative ways to achieve your goals, often times with limited resources.

On the plus side, you choose the hours you work, your work ethics, and — probably the best part — your clients.

BDM life can be challenging at times, but once you get into a routine, it becomes much easier.

Sometimes I too struggle with an ever growing to do list and juggling multiple responsibilities. I can’t state with certainty that I have figured out the perfect system for getting everything done, but each week I add or tweak my system to improve it.

Here are my top tips to get things done:

  • Always start your day with a to do list. This will help you focus.
  • Outline your goals at the beginning of the week. Pick three or four goals at most. Make sure they are realistic and achievable. If not, you will get discouraged and become unmotivated, which can lead to depression. To combat this, you, for instance, could split the one larger goal into smaller tasks and spread them out over the week. It is easier to finish something when you have a clear view of what needs to be done and by when.
  • Stick to your agenda. Don’t “cheat” your time. If you have something planned for a specific day, make sure it happens. Bottom line? The task needs to be completed and only you are responsible for making that happen.
  • Make time for yourself. I tend to forget this, as well, but there is more to life than work (no matter how much you love what you do). You need a break from time to time, so make sure you take a moment to do other activities, too. This can be a lunch with a friend, watching a movie, or curling up on the couch with a good cup of coffee and interesting book.
  • Prioritize. When you start up your computer in the morning and sift through your emails, you may feel panicked thinking about how many things you need to do. Make sure you prioritize your tasks and only add important items to your to do list. Once these top priority tasks are complete, you can go back and solve the rest with a clear mind.
