You finally got the interview call you've been waiting for, yeah! But now you're at stake. You know you only have one chance to make a first good impression. Let me help you overcome that anxiety with my top 5 interview tips :)
1. Don’t be too early!
Ok, so of course you should never be too late but equally don’t come too early! You may think you’re making a great impression, but really you’re not. It signals that you’re too eager and even desperate.
If you’re a worrier, arrive at the location earlier, but please do yourself a favour and don’t go in too early. Go for a walk and stay calm. When it’s time, walk in on time and make the right impression!
2. Show confidence!
First impressions are formed within the first couple of seconds of meeting someone. So, make sure you have a strong introduction and a firm handshake when you meet your interviewer.
If you seem nervous, the interviewer will sense your fear and wonder why you are fearful. Don’t you trust yourself? Do you have doubts?
I know it can be hard to overcome those nerves, but you need to find a way to make yourself feel confident and sure of yourself. Try the superman pose! Many of my clients swear by it! ??
3. Always come prepared!
Of course, you’ve researched the company thoroughly before going into the interview but over and above don’t forget to check up on the latest news on the company and industry to make sure you know exactly what’s happening and what potential challenges the organization may be facing.
For example, one of my clients was applying for Facebook – and we all know what’s happening with Facebook. Imagine she had walked into that interview without that knowledge!
Having such insights can also help you shape your approach to demonstrating your unique selling points, why you’re perfect for the role and what value you can bring to the business. It will really make you stand apart.
4. Don’t talk too much!
Sure, yes and no answers will not make the right impression, but neither will rambling on for hours. Talking too much is a synonym of stress. It makes you look nervous and unsure of your answers.
Slow down and be to the point. It will make a much stronger impression!
5. Ask questions – GOOD questions!
Go beyond the standard candidate questions! Research and really think about what questions you can ask to demonstrate your expertise and the value you can bring to the company.
One of my favourite questions is How do you measure success? It shows you want to succeed at the company and it gives hiring managers the chance to share their expectations with you.
Questions about competitors and the market can also be very compelling. For example, one of my clients created a competitor map to demonstrate how the company was positioned and asked how it was going to stay ahead. Of course, he got the job!
So now you know my top 5 interview tips. I hope it’s helpful! ??
How about you? Do you have any favourite tips to share? Add them in the comments! I would love to hear from you! ??
