This week I want to give you my highlights from my Top 5 favorite books.
When by Daniel Pink
Principles by Ray Dailo
Can’t Hurt me by David Goggins
Atomic Habits by James Clear
12 Rules of Life by Jordan Peterson
#1: When by Daniel Pink
This book blew my mind. Maybe it came at a time when I was just ready for it. Even if you only read the first two chapters, you should read this book.
Top 3 Highlights
1. Timing is everything… and most of our difficult decisions can be changed to "when" decisions instead of "how" decisions
2. Everyone has a unique biological clock that controls each of our daily rhythms
3. How you start something is extremely powerful… if something isn’t going well, just re-start it
#2: Principles by Ray Dalio
Ray Dalio runs the largest hedge fund in the world. This book is just a dry beast filled with insane content that nobody can digest in one sitting for any length of time. But, it’s solid in every way.
Instead of my top 3 highlights I am going to give you Dalio’s breakdown where he talks about doing these 5 things.
"Do 5 Things"
Daily says, to succeed, do each of these 5 things in turn — exclusively and in sequence:
Set clear goals –Choose which goals to pursue. Striving for something you know you can achieve won’t stretch you, so choose ambitious goals that fit your passions.
Welcome challenges and address them– Embrace your problems. Never avoid or ignore them. Prioritize the problems for which the solutions deliver the greatest returns.
Get to the "root causes" of your obstacles–Consider the base causes of your problems. Diagnose the underlying reasons to design effective solutions.
Design your plans –Create detailed plans to fix your problems; include deadlines and clear responsibilities.
Do whatever is necessary to get results –Connect your work to your goals for confidence, motivation and resilience. Measure and keep track of your progress.
#3: Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins
David Goggins has created a name for himself with viral videos and amazing stories of physical endurance. His book is really well written. I would start with his videos, follow him on social media, and then read his book as it will bring much more context.
Top 3 Highlights
1. Don’t skip the last rep
2. When you’ve achieved a goal, celebrate, but also stack: Let the momentum and attitude it took to achieve that milestone carry you into starting on your next victory.
3. The harder you try, the harder life becomes - to your benefit.
#4: Atomic Habits by James Clear
One of my favorite books I have read about habits. I am obsessed with learning about how we build good habits and break bad ones. Since over 40% of our lives are run on auto-pilot, I want to install the best possible programming into my life.
Top 3 Highlights
1. To change a habit, first identify the underlying belief that created it
2. Frequent repetition automates behaviors and turns them into habits
3. Your environment provides a context around your habits
#5: 12 Rules of Life by Jordan Peterson
This is not something you will normally pick up but you should. It’s that awesome. The story telling is fantastic and the flow is smooth. The book is filled with practical tactics and powerful insights.
Top 3 Highlights
1. Ideologies are simple ideas disguised as science or philosophy
2. Cultivating judgment about the difference between virtue and vice is the beginning of wisdom
3. Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping
