My Top 3 Tips for Job Hunting

My Top 3 Tips for Job Hunting

Since wrapping up my search, a few people have asked me for tips to take to their own search. I’ve boiled it down to these three:

  1. ???It’s a numbers game
  2. ???It’s not personal
  3. 0???1???Success is not binary

To elaborate:

???It’s a numbers game

Like any good sales person touts, you have to play the numbers! Companies aren’t just screening a handful of candidates, so you can’t count on a limited amount of leads. By consistently adding to the top of your funnel you can ensure you are maximizing your interviews.

In practice: One lead generation tactic I used was to scour my network - in total I connected with close to 200 people in my network (some were inbound thankfully!). Was it exhausting? Yes! Did it pay off? Definitely. The bonus was I got to catch up with so many wonderful humans and see where life has taken them! ?? ??????????

???It’s not personal

Not getting that interview you really wanted, or converting to the next round can be awfully demoralizing. How could it not feel personal? With working a large number of leads, this started to sting a little less. In instances where I was able to dig deeper, I learned there is so much more at play.

In practice: Try to keep your perspective and treat it like a business. It’s a weird time right now - head count reductions, hiring freezes, budget cuts are real. But on a positive side, so is internal mobility, external candidates who’ve been interviewing with the company for months, and the honest to goodness truth that you probably dodged a bullet with a role you may not have been totally jazzed about! These factors might not have anything to do with you but definitely impact the outcome. So rely on tip #1 and work the numbers!

0???1???Success is not binary

Speaking of outcomes, a job hunt can only feel successful if you have an offer in hand! However, you have to remember to celebrate all the wins along the way. That cold outreach that got a response? Win! That new lead you added to your pipeline? Win!

In practice: For me, pulling together a little report on Friday, with all my stats really helped me reflect on my progress week over the weeks. If you’d like to start doing this - here’s a handy template for you! ( Our friend Rachel Green is back ??)
