My top 16 UK Government project & programme guidance documents - nerd alert

I often get asked, "Aleister, what would you say is the bestest" UK Government major projects and programme guidance documents? That's a great question! I personally think there are some brilliant documents out-there with great insight, advice, and guidance that are really valuable, but often overlooked! I think this is partly because UK Gov isn't very good at promoting these documents and people simply dont know where to look. Nevertheless, I have decided to produce my top and extensively used 16 UK Gov documents (you lucky people) - literally given the keys away to my kingdom!

If you would like to understand how you and your project/delivery organisation can unlock/embed/implement any of the below or simply would like a follow-up conversation, then as always, please feel free to reach out to me. Please feel free to follow me and Oxford Global Projects , if you would like to hear more great insights from us.

Please feel to share the below with colleagues or family members, I know my brother loves reading about all things DECA :). Please add any other documents you feel are also worthy of being in my top 16 in the comments - happy Friday

Thanks Aleister Hellier. I agree with you - the UK Government has an excellent suite of documents to assist the P3M activity.

I love your list, Aleister - many of these documents are new to me and I look forward to looking into them. A few years back, ‘the penny dropped’ when I read the HM Treasury’s ‘Plain English Guide to Business Cases’ - as it has for many colleagues I later shared it with. A highly readable intro to the wider context of project&programme delivery. It certainly inspired me to read up on the subject in more depth. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/935528/Green_Book_guidance_short_plain_English_guide_to_assessing_business_cases.pdf

I'm biased to the old HMT guidances and major programme UK guidances - they are still valuable though. For example the older business cases were more on the mark than the newer ones. On the cost estimate guidance do they cover lifecycle, soft fm and hard fm costs? If they don't I recommend reintroducing this. If they do then that is brilliant as the industry's use of OPEX is limited especially in relation to mega projects. As an aside the techinal guidance for each industry were always brilliant too eg schools building bulletins. Health tech memorandums HTM etc.
