A law student recently asked me to recommend a few books which could better prepare him as a disputes lawyer or litigator. This rather innocuous request got me thinking. There are many books – both fiction and non-fiction—which have, over the years, shaped my views on the profession. So, here’s my pick of the top 16 books - not in any particular order - which a would-be-litigator shouldn’t miss:
- My Life in Court by Louis Nizer
- The Trial by Franz Kafka
- To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee
- The Man to See by Evan Thomas
- Roses in December by Justice M.C. Chagla
- The Story of My Life by Clarence Darrow
- My Life, Law & Other Things by M.C. Setalvad
- The Jury Returns by Louis Nizer
- In the Shadow of the Law by Kermit Roosevelt
- Bleak House by Charles Dickens
- Nuremberg: Infamy on Trial by Joseph E. Persico
- And the Dead Shall Rise: The Murder of Mary Phagan and the Lynching of Leo Frank by Steve Oney
- A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines
- Justice for All: Earl Warren and the Nation He Made by Jim Newton
- Anatomy of a Murder by Robert Traver
- The Discipline of Law by Lord Denning
