In today’s environment, many organizations that usually host live, in person industry events are looking to pivot towards virtual events. I’ve attended several online events, with some that span across the day. If you’re planning to attend one, here are my personal tips to keep you engaged and energized.
1. Download the platform app: If you’re just listening in to a meeting or webinar, download the app (if available) and move around to stay active while listening.
2. If you have a captions feature, turn it on: It can be difficult to understand a speaker if there is background noise or regional accents involved. This feature captures the person speaking and turns their speech into words.
3. Take regular breaks between calls: If you have back-to-back calls, block out time in your calendar to have a proper rest.
4. Use OneNote: Capture notes and screenshot images with the snipping tool. Some virtual events provide collateral much later than the event.
5. Doodle: Some people find mind mapping more effective than writing bullet points. Also, its proven people remember associated images better than words.
6. Chat: If the features is enabled, use it. Connect and engage with the speaker and audience. If it isn’t, then side chat with colleagues on the same call.
7. Stay social: Write some take-aways after the event and share them with your team, or on social media.
8. Keep hydrated: Remember to take regular sips of water to keep your concentration levels up. Keep a bottle nearby. Humans are like plants; we need be watered to grow.
9. Look out of a window: Staring at a screen for long periods of time can cause eye fatigue. Turn around and look out of a window from time to time—it also helps you to actively listening.
10. Share: When you take part in an event, share what you found out with your team. It can be soundbites, graphics, charts or even some random pieces of information that amused you.
