My top 10 technology trends that are likely to shape the future in 2023

The future of technology is always uncertain, but based on current advancements and emerging technologies, here are ten trends from my new report 'Disruptive Decarbonisation' that are likely to shape the future in 2023.

  1. Artificial Intelligence (AI) - AI will continue to advance, making it more powerful and more accessible to organisations of all sizes. It will be integrated into various industries such as healthcare, finance, and transportation, significantly improving efficiency, accuracy, and decision making.
  2. 5G Wireless Networks (5G) - 5G networks will bring faster internet speeds, lower latency, and more capacity than ever before, making it possible for more devices to be connected. This will enable new applications and use cases such as virtual reality, industrial automation, and smart cities.
  3. Internet of Things (IoT) - IoT will continue to grow, with an increasing number of devices becoming connected to the internet. This will lead to the creation of smart homes, cities, and factories, and the development of new services and business models.
  4. Edge Computing - Edge computing is the practice of processing data closer to the source, instead of sending it to a central location for processing. This will reduce the amount of data that needs to be transmitted over networks and will enable faster, more efficient data processing.
  5. Quantum Computing - Quantum computing will become more prevalent in the coming years, bringing new possibilities to solve complex problems in fields such as cryptography, drug discovery, and weather forecasting.
  6. Cybersecurity - Cybersecurity will continue to be a top priority as the number and sophistication of cyber threats increase. Advancements in technologies such as AI and blockchain will play a crucial role in improving cybersecurity.
  7. Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) - VR and AR will continue to evolve, with more realistic and immersive experiences. They will be used in various fields such as entertainment, education, and remote work.
  8. Biotechnology - Biotechnology will continue to advance, with new developments in fields such as gene editing, synthetic biology, and regenerative medicine. This will lead to new treatments, therapies, and products.
  9. Nanotechnology - Nanotechnology will continue to play a significant role in various industries, with the development of new materials, sensors, and devices at the nanoscale.
  10. Robotics and Automation - Robotics and automation will continue to advance, with more sophisticated and versatile robots being developed. This will lead to new applications in fields such as manufacturing, transportation, and healthcare.

These are some of the technological trends that are likely to shape the future in 2023. However, it is important to keep in mind that technology is constantly evolving, and new developments can happen at any time. It is important for organisations to stay informed and adapt to new technologies in order to stay competitive in the ever-changing technological landscape. Additionally, it's important to keep in mind that technology alone is not enough, it is important to take an holistic approach that includes ethical considerations and societal implications when implementing new technologies.

Discover more emerging technological developments and strategies that will enable your organisation to improve performance, reduce risk and generate growth.

"...it's important to keep in mind that technology alone is not enough, it is important to take an holistic approach that includes ethical considerations and societal implications when implementing new technologies." Very well said. Will greed and profit get higher priority over ethical, responsible implementation of technology? Watch this thought provoking video by Shoshana Zuboff who coined the word #surveillancecapitalism https://youtu.be/hIXhnWUmMvw This is a summary of her book "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism" which is quite captivating. Nobel Lecture given by Nobel Peace Prize laureate 2021 Maria Ressa https://youtu.be/NsWVb2AUl5Y "Social media is a deadly game for power and money, what Shoshana Zuboff calls surveillance capitalism, extracting our private lives for outsized corporate gain. Our personal experiences are sucked into a database, organized by AI, then sold to the highest bidder. .. An invisible atom bomb exploded in our information ecosystem, and the world must act as it did after Hiroshima. Like that time, we need to create new institutions, like the United Nations, and new codes stating our values, like the universal declaration of human rights, to prevent humanity from doing its worse."
