Just penning down my thoughts as an interviewer.
Keeping to the format : 5 bullets : I. First Impression, your personality II. Competence III. Right Fit IV. Motivation, Enthusiasm & Commitment V. Leadership
I. First Impression, your personality
As you must have heard First Impression is the Last impression...I would say it is atleast a lasting impression. Get it right. I would like to know as a person and am definitely evaluating your personality, right from the moment you walk into the door or make the first handshake. Thoughts going on in the mind : Are you professional, to start with looking professional. Personality comes in next, do you show confidence, warmth. Sociable and can you put me at comfort, which means you can make our clients comfortable. All this in the first 30 seconds - 1 minute!
II. Competence
Competence, it's tricky for an interviewer to check out competence or so I feel. Basically, this is where the trust comes in, you rely on what is written in the resume and then you want to check / re-affirm what is read. Be prepared to defend your resume and add on any relevant information. I am looking for background / information that will help me get comfortable to know you can do those things. Let me know how, maybe describe a situation, give an example, if you have got the certifications, maybe show those to me.
III. Right Fit
I want to be able to hire someone who will fit well with the team, organisation. Getting the Right Fit!! (Sure you heard this before!!) So, how do you assure the interviewer that they are making the right choice. First, Be YOURSELF!! Talk a little bit about yourself other than work, what do you on weekends, hobbies, pass-times. You can talk about the current workplace where how get along with others, any examples you can share about team work or projects. Talking a little about your personal life does help put things in perspective, gets the comfort whether or not this will affect your attitude / mood towards the job.
IV. Motivation, Enthusiasm & Commitment
Your motivation and commitment towards the job and the organisation is of utmost importance. Sometimes, it almost gets into asking the most obvious : What's your commitment level? How much ever of a cliche, we all like to know that our company is the best and we want to know that you want to work for us and that this would be your choice of organisation. Interest in the overall field is also helpful in knowing that you are not just looking at this as another job. Positive outlook, enthusiasm and showing that you are a looking for a long term career and not just a job will go a long way.
V. Leadership
Leadership is looked at in many ways! I may not be looking to hire the next CEO and you may not want that in your career. It's alright!! What I would be looking for is just that will you be a good example for the rest of the team as you spend time with the organisation. Are you willing to take more responsibility. For the ones looking for a more ambitious route, same thing applies, good example, additional responsibility, show evidences, go for it, more breadth and depth of these things is what I would look for.
I will leave you with this thought - If the question is unexpected (or you don't know an answer), be honest and let the interviewer know. Honestly, maybe even the interviewer doesn't know. It's easier to sit on the other side and ask questions!

Connecting the People and Business Dots
7 年Simple, to the point and a good read. It'll be worthwhile to get comments from the junior management / freshers on this topic.:) However, I tend to differ on the first point. In today's world of showcasing and putting your best foot forward, this can be a well-prepared point. So I tend to put personality / appearance as last priority.
