My Tekkie Town and Xpresso Café SA experience !!
In 2001 I received a call from a guy who introduced himself as a Tekkie Smous (Tekkie Trader) from George. He wanted to open his first official Tekkie Town shop in our new Somerset Value Mart development. The rest is history with Braam van Huyssteen opening up +- 300 Tekkie Towns and selling the group this year for billions to Steinhoff.
This year I had a similar experience with a couple asking me to assist them with a lease for a "Cheap Coffee" -shop in Durbanville. After I initially though that a "cheap" coffee shop in Durbanville will not work, I was amazed when I saw the crowds lining up to experience Xpresso Café SA or as some calls it, "The R10 Coffee shop".
With more than 200 request for franchise within the first 3 weeks, I am today predicting that Xpresso Café SA will be the next "WOW" retail story in South Africa.
What is the lesson? Businesses with affordable good quality products will always be a hit !!!

7 年Humble beginnings! I still remember them having their very first shop in Mossel Bay of not even 100m2! I think it was called Tropica if I remember correctly. This was the early 90's!

8 年Excellent article. Braam did very well and is still as humble as the first time I met him some 14 years ago! I wish Expresso SA all of the best.

8 年Great story. So often we turn down these retailers as the risks are high. But just goes to show we should all have a leap of faith sometimes.
