My Team Is Killing Me!

My Team Is Killing Me!

My Team Is Killing Me!?

When I’m coaching entrepreneurs, leaders, and agency owners, I have found some recurring themes in our conversations:

  • My team is slowing me down - they can’t do things as quickly as I can. It’s just faster for me to do it myself.

  • I wonder often if my team even pays for itself, or if they’re just costing me money and not adding as much value as I’d like.

  • How do I find the right people? My team just feels like a revolving door. I hire someone, think they’re a great fit, and 2 or 3 weeks later I can’t believe I ever thought that!

  • My team seems to drain my time far more than any time they save me. Help!

People are complicated and messy. And often, leaders can see them as a distraction from the work they have to do. If we could just do what we do without all the messy people, how much easier this would be!

But when we think or say that, we miss a critical part of what leadership is.

The people you lead are not a distraction from the main thing. They ARE the main thing.

We’ve all heard companies proclaim that their people are their most important assets. By contrast, Jim Collins teaches, “In great companies and organizations, your people are not your most important asset. The right people are.”

Your team is not a distraction, a nuisance, or a problem; they are the mission. Investing in them is not a tertiary responsibility of a leader; it is a primary responsibility.

Leading a team of people is a SKILL. And like any skill, it CAN and SHOULD be developed.?

How do you do that??

This is one of the areas in which I coach entrepreneurs, leaders, and agency owners. I’ve led teams for nearly thirty years, and I’ve been coaching leaders for over 25 years now. I have a large knowledge base from which to pull, from my own experience as well as the thousands of coaching conversations I’ve had over those years. I can help you move from where you are today to where you want to be.?

Some questions that might be helpful to ask yourself:

  • What is the best way I can contribute to my team’s success?
  • What does my team need from me that only I can bring?
  • How can I serve my team members where they are?
  • What are the intentional ways I will choose to invest in them this week?

As with any part of life, remember: excellence doesn’t happen by accident. It takes intentionality.?

Do you wish leading a team was more energizing and less draining? Is it possible to grow and develop your skill as a team leader so that your team becomes a major energizing GAIN instead of a DRAIN??

"The people you lead are not a distraction from the main thing. They ARE the main thing." This is an excellent reminder, and the four questions you share are powerful ones for a team leader to ask themself.
