MY TAKEAWAYS: Ursula von der Leyen, candidate for President of the European Commission
Maria Walsh
Member of the European Parliament for Midlands-North-West Constituency - Fine Gael & EPP Group
This morning I am sitting in the European parliamentary chamber – the Hemicycle - in Strasbourg listening to the Candidate Debate. Today MEPs, including myself, will vote for the new European Commission President.
Ursula Von der Leyen is a member of the European People's Party (EPP Group). Fine Gael MEPs are also members of this political grouping, the largest in the European Parliament.
I am on the record as pledging my support for Ms Von der Leyen for a second mandate 2024-2029. Here are some takeaways from her speech this morning.
Von der Leyen Commitments
?? Continued focus on the Green Deal and our targets in 2030 and 2050. Implementation and investment is now needed. Green Industrial Deal shared in first 100 days.
?? Completing our Capitals Market Union. Our own markets are too fragmented. An EU Savings & Investment Union to be delivered to fund and invest in EU startups and our entrepreneurs.?
???? Invest in our security and defence. Protect our airspace. Cyber and hybrid threats are growing. Combat fraud, traffickers. We must make sure police can work across Europe without borders. Double Europol staff and funding to make it a European wide agency.?
???? ???? Bloodshed in Gaza must stop. Immediate and permanent ceasefire is needed. €200 Million Euro of Aid delivered. Release hostages. Two state solution is the best way to secure peace.

???? New strategy for the food and farming sector. Fair income for farmers. Nobody should be forced to sell high quality produce for low price. Strategy for water quality.?
?? Mental health big focus for workers and young people. It is a crisis - excessive screen time and cyber bullying needs an EU to take action. Enquiry and work will be done.?
?? For our EU wide Housing crisis, she will appoint a Commissioner with a responsibility for housing and create an EU affordable housing plan.?
?? Continued work on women's rights, building on the work of women on board and pay transparency directives.
?? Democracy is a shared treasure. Support independent journalism, respecting the Rule of Law is required for EU funds.?
?? On Ukraine, Europe will stand with the people and the country for as long as it takes.
Right now, Europe needs to come together more than ever. As an Irish MEP representing Midlands North West I will continue to represent with a strong voice and a tough stance for my constituents.
