My Summer Internship at Volvo Group Truck Operations, North America

Introduction: This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern at Volvo Group Truck Operations, North America Central Distribution Centre (CDC) in Byhalia, MS. As a Data Engineering Intern with the Supplier Logistics Team (SML), I embarked on a journey that combined data analytics with logistics, serving customers across North America.

Experience: My role centered around supporting the data analytical needs of CDC operations, particularly in managing inbound and outbound transactions. I was responsible for building data pipelines for various business workflows, querying data from WMS-II, and translating these workflows into reference tables as part of the WMS-III readiness initiative.

Working primarily on Azure Cloud, I utilized resources such as ADLS Gen II Storage, Blob Storage, Azure Databricks for spark transformations, and ADF pipelines for workflow implementation and orchestration. Additionally, I had the chance to work with Logic Apps and Power Automate tools for an ad-hoc requirement. Our team followed an agile model with two-week sprints, complete with sprint planning and retrospective meetings to enhance our productivity.

Lessons and Growth: This internship allowed me to see firsthand how data analytics plays a crucial role in logistics, particularly in the aftermarket automotive domain. I learned how the CDCs and RDCs help Volvo Group serve its customers throughout the US. A highlight was visiting the CDC, a sprawling facility spanning over one million square feet in Byhalia, MS.

Reflections: Beyond the technical skills and industry knowledge, I cherish the friendships I made during my internship. I am grateful for the mentorship and support from Onur ?rcün, MBA , Gokhan Caglar Korlu , Swapnil Pednekar , Rajratna Patil , and the entire SML team. Their guidance and collaboration made this experience truly memorable.
