My Summer Internship Experience at Toyota Financial Services

Overview:

As I approach my last week as a Graduate Management Intern at Toyota Financial Services Corporation , I want to look back and reflect on my experience over the last eleven weeks.

Throughout the internship, I have consumed a lot of knowledge and have been challenged to bring my best self forward. I attended several networking events, speaker series and volunteering events that provided me insight into what life at Toyota looks like and allowed me to connect with my peers.

Experience:

During my time at Toyota, I had the privilege to work on various projects but will focus on two specific projects for now. The first project involved building a Tableau Dashboard for executives to have a better overview of Business Domains incorporated into a new application. I got the opportunity to be the first person to connect this new application to Tableau and build a dashboard. This was very interesting but presented its own set of challenges. I enjoyed playing around with the data to build the perfect views, and was also able to develop skills in building calculated fields, data visualizations, actions, etc. Additionally, the dashboard was able to identify any possible data quality issues within the application, any task past due, timelines, heat maps, etc. The dashboard was also dynamic in nature, meaning that you could click on something like past due tasks, and it would pull up additional details of the task such as task number, name, and due dates in order to make the dashboard a one stop shop. This ensured that executives and users did not have to run cumbersome reports from the application after identifying that items are past due since the dashboard provided all necessary details.

The second project was part of a larger company objective that includes an overhaul of a tool currently in use. I was responsible for building a hierarchy that organizes every risk the enterprise faces in order to make them easier to track and straight forward for reporting purposes. To ensure the hierarchy is thorough and void of any gaps I networked with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and researched various internal and external sources before devising the perfect proposal. The team strategically planned the merger of the existing version of the tool and the proposal which will allow us to find any gaps that we may have missed before finalizing the hierarchy. Although the hierarchy is small piece of the objective, it ensures the remainder of the processes flow smoothly and most importantly, it ensures accurate and error free reporting.

Conclusion:?

Finally, my time at Toyota North America has been an amazing journey that has allowed me to learn very important aspects of the business and presented the opportunity for me to take on a challenge in partaking in crucial business objectives that are revolutionary for the company.

While this experience has truly been a blast for me, it would not have been the same without the people I was around. I would like to thank Olu O. , Tom Larson , Jason Kelley and everyone who has guided me throughout the internship, and took time out of their busy schedules for coffee chats. Special thanks to Stephanie Egger for her continued support in ensuring I am successful and taking time out of her extremely busy schedule to help me overcome roadblocks and challenges. Last but not the least, thank to my fellow intern's Amani C. and Eleanor Feinman for sharing their insights and suggestions on the projects I worked on.
