My Summer in Governor Wes Moore's Executive Office

My Summer in Governor Wes Moore's Executive Office

Insight into Maryland Public Service Scholars Program

This summer, I was a part of the Maryland Public Service Scholars Program (MPSS)’s 2024 cohort. MPSS is a 10-week fellowship that provides students across Maryland the opportunity to develop as future leaders in Maryland’s public and social sectors. Within MPSS, there are four MPSS sub-programs. My subprogram, The Governor’s Summer Internship Program, introduces students to the challenges and rewards of working within state government. Within GSIP, I was placed in the Governor’s Executive Office with First Lady Dawn Moore’s team.

Now that I’ve completed my internship, I’m reflecting on the journey I’ve undertaken and the myriad experiences that have shaped my perspective on public service. This internship has been more than just a professional development opportunity; it has been a transformative period that has not only refined my career goals but also deepened my commitment to equity and justice.

Experiences and Highlights

The internship offered me a unique vantage point into the operations of a political administration. The opportunity to work closely with the Governor and the First Lady and participate in significant events was both exciting and educational. These experiences provided a firsthand look at the inner workings of state government and allowed me to see the real impact of public service on communities.

One of the most fulfilling aspects was realizing how well my skills align with the executive operations of a political administration. I had the chance to engage in projects that required a mix of strategic thinking, organization, and communication—skills that I found I not only enjoyed using but also excelled at. This realization has been a key highlight of my internship and has significantly influenced my future career aspirations.

Lowlights and Lessons Learned

Like any experience, there were challenges and low points. Navigating the complexities of government operations and understanding the intricate dynamics of public policy were not always easy. However, these challenges were valuable learning opportunities. Ultimately, they taught me resilience and the need to stay adaptable in the face of unexpected circumstances.

One of the most humbling lessons was realizing how much more I need to learn about equity and justice in my state. Despite having a background that I believed gave me a solid foundation, I was confronted with the stark reality of my limited understanding, particularly regarding the historical context of disenfranchisement in Baltimore, my own backyard. This realization has deepened my commitment to continuing my education on these critical issues and has strengthened my resolve to contribute meaningfully to the pursuit of equity and justice locally.

Influence on Career Goals + Passion for Public Service

This internship has had a profound impact on my career goals. I now have a clearer vision of my future and a strong desire to pursue a career in the executive branch of state government. The experience confirmed that this path aligns with both my skills and my passion for public service. The connections I’ve made with professionals who are eager to support my career aspirations have also bolstered my confidence in taking this next step. Further, my passion for public service has not only remained steadfast but has also intensified. I have a much stronger understanding of how my skills and interests fit into the broader picture of public service and am even more excited and committed to this field.?

Understanding of Equity and Justice

One of the most significant shifts in my perspective has been my understanding of equity and justice. The internship provided me with a deeper awareness of the systemic issues that pervade our society, particularly those related to historical racism and discrimination. This experience has underscored the importance of humility and lifelong learning in the pursuit of justice. I now recognize that I have much more to learn, and I am committed to continuing this journey.

Preparation for the Future

I feel more prepared for my future career than ever before. The contacts I’ve made are not just professional connections but mentors who are willing and eager to support my transition into the workforce. This network, coupled with the skills and insights I’ve gained, has equipped me with a solid foundation to build upon as I move forward in my career.

My Advice

To future interns, my biggest piece of advice is to advocate for yourself. This experience will be what you make of it, so take initiative. Ask questions, seek out opportunities to connect with people, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The more you invest in your internship, the more you’ll gain from it.
