Identify testing types and techniques to be used. Allocate resources and define roles and responsibilities. Tools: IBM Rational Quality Manager for planning and resource allocation. Contents of a Test Plan: Test plan ID, introduction, test items, features to be tested, testing tasks, pass/fail criteria, test environment, test schedule, responsibilities, and risks.

  • Objective: Ensure the testing environment mimics the production environment.
  • Activities: Set up hardware and software requirements. Configure network and servers. Tools: Custom scripts and IBM tools for environment setup.

  • Objective: Execute the test cases and validate the software.
  • Activities: Run test cases manually or through automated scripts. Log defects and retest after fixes. Tools: Microfocus ALM, Jira, IBM Rational ClearQuest for defect tracking, custom scripts for automation.

2.1 Functional Testing

  • Integration Testing: Ensures different modules or services interact correctly. Techniques: Big bang, top-down, bottom-up, and sandwich integration testing.
  • System Testing: Validates the complete and integrated software product to ensure compliance with the requirements.

Non-functional testing focuses on aspects that are not related to specific behaviors or functions of the system.

  • S.M.A.R.T Method: Applying Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound criteria to reviews ensures thoroughness and accuracy.

7. Metrics and Reporting

7.1 Test Metrics

  • Test Coverage: Ensuring all requirements are tested.
  • Defect Density: Measuring the number of defects relative to the size of the software.
  • Test Execution Metrics: Tracking the number of test cases executed, passed, and failed.
